17-4 Precipitation Hardening
UNS S17400
A chromium-nickel-copper precipitation hardening stainless steel, 17-4 is ideal for applications requiring a combination of high strength, moderate abrasion resistance, and consistent physical properties in environments up to 600 °F (316 °C). Its annealed martensitic structure lends itself to simple, low temperature heat treatments, which precipitate copper-rich phases during heating and cooling. Corrosion resistance (atmospheric and acidic) comparable to 304 and 430 stainless steels. Untempered 17-4 material is typically not recommended for direct use, as it is less ductile than aged material and can result in embrittlement or chloride stress corrosion.
